Rolls-Royce has launched its Pearl line of engines, which will be the sole engine for a new range of business jets unveiled by Bombardier.


The FTSE 100 engine maker said the Pearl 15 was the first instalment of the new range of business aviation engines, which will be used in the Bombardier's Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft.

The Canadian plane and train manufacturer showed off the upgraded jets on 27 May and highlighted the Rolls engines as a feature. It is seeking to tap into a pick-up in demand for corporate jets as the world economy recovers.

Pearl 15 will have more thrust and will be quieter while consuming less fuel than existing engines, Rolls said. The engine, developed in Germany, is undergoing flight tests in Wichita, Kansas, and is scheduled to start service at the end of 2019.

Chris Cholerton, who took over as the head of Rolls's aviation division in February, said: "Our teams have worked hard behind the scenes to develop this new engine and we are proud, once again, to lead the way in business aviation. The Pearl engine is a pioneering product, bringing together the most eco-friendly and efficient technologies available today."
