Although the City pages of Saturday's papers may focus on Centrica's trading patterns, outlined in a statement issued on Friday, the front page news is likely to be the energy provider's thinly veiled warning that fuel bills are set to go up later this year.

In the Times, Tempus points out the long term strategy of construction firm Morgan Sindall. It is using earnings from core construction work to invest in regeneration projects, like town centres. It may well pay off, thinks Tempus, highlighting the 6% yield, but in the near term profits will be hard to come by: "a long term play" is the conclusion.

Used car volumes were strong in 2011 at car dealer Pendragon but demand for new cars tailed off as customers delayed purchases.

Trading statements from Diageo have, in the past, tended to be on the stodgy side, according to the Tempus column in the Times. When you are the world's biggest drinks behemoth, with brands such as Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff vodka and Captain Morgan rum, updates tend to involve low-digit rises and falls in this market or that. But there has been more momentum behind its performance in recent months and yesterday's statement was sufficiently ahead of market expectations to propel the shares to a new high point, up almost 4 per cent to £13.31½. Overall, sales for the first quarter were ahead by 9 per cent, with volumes up 5 per cent, reflecting price increases in some of its markets despite the difficult economic conditions. The outcome was flattered by a few one-off factors, though, and the real rate of sales growth was closer to 6.5 per cent. The shares sell on about 14 times this year's earnings. Given their outperformance, they may struggle to make much headway for now but remain a strong long-term hold, recommends the Times.

The rights issue from Pendragon, our biggest car dealer, does the job of shoring-up the finances and putting the business in a better shape to go ahead. It is also enormous, nine new shares for eight and at 10p, is a 54% discount to the last closing share price. Nick Bubb at Arden Partners is looking for £33.5 million pre-tax profit this year. The rights issue solves a lot of problems and the new shares should be taken up, but further progress looks to be slow, says the Times.
