Sector movers: Trump comments on Russia hit Evraz, defence firms lifted
Industrial metals & mining was the most depressed sector on Monday, as Russian steel producer Evraz again weighed.
Missile strikes in Syria were stated by analysts and traders as the cause of a choppy day for crude oil prices, with initial market wobbles dissipated as US President Donald Trump seemed satisfied that the weekend's ordnance was sufficient deterrent to the Syrian regime.
"However, just when markets believed the tensions between the US and Russia were set to improve, Trump today accused Russia and China of currency manipulation, maintaining a focus on his two favourite sparring partners. In a period that has seen Russian associated firms suffer given the imposition of a raft of sanctions it comes as no surprise that we have seen Russian-owned steel producer Evraz shedding 7% over the course of today's session," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG.
The artillery action also lifted shares in the defence and aerospace sector. Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and Meggit were among the highest risers, with the latter boosted by a positive newspaper write-up over the weekend.
