Facebook will prioritise posts from friends over publishers
Founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has announced Facebook will give priority to posts from friends over posts from companies or the media, with the aim of "having more meaningful social interactions".
In a post on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said he believes that videos and corporate posts are not positive for the users of the social network.
"Recently we've gotten feedback from our community that public content -- posts from businesses, brands and media -- is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other," said Zuckerberg.
He stated that Facebook has made changes in this direction since last year and has let users know that they will be seeing more posts from their friends and family.
These changes may have been a response to accusations that the network was sealing users in their own bubbles, exploiting human psychology for profit and expanding the reach of misinformation.
The company started to change the way it filters posts and videos in the News Feed this Thursday.
Facebook possesses four of the most popular smartphone apps having developed over the years an algorithm that helps detect the content that people might want to see, but that will no longer be the aim of the company, Zuckerberg said.
"I'm changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions," said the founder.
The company believed those changes might reduce some of the participation rates on the social network in the short-term but would boost them and be better for business in the long-term.
"By focusing on bringing people closer together -- whether it's with family and friends, or around important moments in the world -- we can help make sure that Facebook is time well spent."
