Sweeteners group Tate & Lyle rose after it said first half adjusted operating profit will be similar to last year's level, in line with expectations. The group said it saw an improved performance in the second quarter in its Speciality Food Ingredients business.
Anglo American was also on the rise, even after Anglo American Platinum announced that attendance at its Rustenburg mines remains below 20%, despite its repeated calls for the illegally striking employees to return to work. The company said it has been left with no choice but to initiate disciplinary action, which could lead to dismissals.
The mining sector was seen tracking metal prices higher, with Evraz, Rio Tinto, Glencore and Antofagasta all making decent gains.
Germany's defence minister, Thomas De Maizière, reckons the October 10th deadline for thrashing out the details of a merger between EADS and BAE Systems might be on the optimistic side, prompting a rise in BAE's share price. The stock had previously fallen after it was rumoured the two firms were considering improving the merger terms in EADS's favour.
Meanwhile, Compass fell after it was downgraded by both Numis and Seymour Pierce, on the back of the firm's announcement that the on-going tough conditions in Europe, particularly Southern Europe, have prompted it to take actions which will result in a £150m exceptional cash charge and a £195m non-cash charge over the next two years. Due to the aforementioned actions analysts at Seymour Pierce have written that: "We are downgrading our stance from BUY to ADD as we believe these actions could delay further returns of capital, a key driver of the share price over the past year."
