Questor in the Telegraph still holds a candle for National Grid, which manages electricity transmission across the UK, while also having interests in the US. The big question is how much the power regulator Ofgem will let it charge its customers in the next regulatory period, but the firm generated profits ahead of expectations in the financial year to the end of March, trades at 12.2 times forward earnings and yields around 6%. Questor says hold until Ofgem's announcement in July.

Mining and financial stocks were providing a drag on the Footsie today, as investors continue to flee from 'risker' assets amidst the global economic uncertainty. Providing further downward pressure on the resources sector was US broker Jefferies after having slashed its target prices for mining stocks under its coverage by an average 10% after recent underperformance.

Royal Bank of Scotland's insurance arm is poised to appoint Mike Biggs as its chairman with a brief to lead a £5bn flotation of the Churchill and Direct Line brands this year. Mr Biggs, a former HSBC banker and Aviva finance director, is chairman of Resolution Limited, Clive Cowdery's FTSE 100 investment vehicle. It is understood that Mr Biggs intends to stay on at Resolution until 2014, when its UK Life Project, to consolidate life assurance companies, draws to an end. It will mean that Mr Biggs is likely to chair two FTSE 100 companies at the same time, a move that is frowned on by some investors, but which does not breach current boardroom best-practice codes, The Times says.
