Questor in the Telegraph still holds a candle for National Grid, which manages electricity transmission across the UK, while also having interests in the US. The big question is how much the power regulator Ofgem will let it charge its customers in the next regulatory period, but the firm generated profits ahead of expectations in the financial year to the end of March, trades at 12.2 times forward earnings and yields around 6%. Questor says hold until Ofgem's announcement in July.

The Tempus column in The Times ponders which stocks would fit into a share portfolio consisting of stocks exposed to London and the South East only, and suggests that one would be Shaftesbury, the property company whose assets consist almost entirely of shops, restaurants and bars in the West End. Its full-year figures yesterday contained one startling table. Over the past five years, gross income from its property portfolio rose year on year through the recession, up another 13 per cent to £77.5 million. Their estimated rental value showed a slight dip in 2009, but that rising income suggests tenants merely continued to pay over the odds. The shares are unusual in selling at a premium to net assets of 8 per cent above the 463p a share at the end of September, up 11.8 per cent over the year. Still a long-term hold for those who believe the London economy will continue to outperform, reckons Tempus.

The last time we looked at the Savills, we opted to buy, reasoning that its international reach, coupled with exposure to the resilient upper end of the UK market, gave it an edge. Yesterday's half-yearly results confirmed our confidence. The group said revenues in the six months to the end of June had climbed by 10 per cent, with pre-tax profits surging by nearly 40 per cent, as it drew strength from activity in the prime central London property segment and from the Asia-Pacific region, which remains buoyant. Also reassuring is the fact that, despite showing resilience, Savills trades on multiples of around 11.6 times forward earnings for this year, and on under 10 times on the estimates of next year, according to UBS. At the same time, it boasts dividend yields of more than 4 per cent. Buy, suggests the Independent.
