Much has changed since the Independent's Investment Column looked at spread betting firm IG Group. For one thing, the economic outlook has turned darker, making IG's chunky prospective dividend yield of 5% (and higher on some estimates) look that much more attractive, the Indy reckons. The income, and the quality of the UK business, suddenly appears more valuable in light of the weaker trends in the global economy. Rising revenues in uncertain times, a quality franchise and a healthy dividend yield at a time when earnings across all manner of sectors are in question - make IG look like a good bet. At around 12 times forward earnings for next year, falling to under 11 times for the year after, IG is not expensive either. Take a punt on the shares, says the Indy.

Various unnamed customers have decided to rein back on production of new tablet PCs because of the uncertainty over consumer spending. Wolfson is not saying which, but one of the products will be BlackBerry's PlayBook tablet, which has appeared to mixed reviews.

IG Group announced a management rejig and the closure of its sport-betting business yesterday along with its end-of-year trading statement. The moves signal a welcome decision to concentrate on the spread-betting company's core financial business and to expand it in new markets and make use of new technology. It is clearly a good business but if we invested today it would be for the dividend yield of about 5 per cent with the promise of growth still to be borne out. Well worth keeping tabs on, in our view, but for now we would rate the shares a hold, says the Independent.

There is little to complain about in Compass's first-half figures, which indicate that the world's biggest caterer is moving forward on all fronts. But it is fast approaching a point where it has to take some strategic decisions over the balance sheet. Britain and continental Europe are looking decidedly slow, but both the US and the rest of the world notched up a higher share of group revenues in the first half. The shares, down 4p at 575p, sell on about 15 times' this year's earnings. Given the uncertainties, high enough for now, says the Times.

It's been a rocky few months for shareholders and clients of F&C Asset Management. In February, the activist investor Sherborne won its long and fractious battle to oust F&C's previous chairman. In terms of valuation, F&C trades on a price-earnings ratio of about 10 times Peel Hunt's forecasts for 2011, a discount to the wider sector. Given the the firm's continued growth during its tricky period it might be tempting to buy in. However, we think Mr Bramson's review leaves uncertainty hanging over the stock, says the Independent, which recommends holding the shares.
