India-focused Vedanta Resources is thought to be mulling the demerger of its aluminium business that could value the separate entity at about £13bn.
If the miner decides to go ahead, possibly this summer, the new business would be the world's fourth largest aluminium producer.
Market watchers believe an announcement from the firm, majority owned by the Agarwal family, could come as early as this week.
Other divisions that could go their own way over the next few years include the zinc, Zambian copper, iron ore and power businesses.
