US close: Big year ends on low note

US markets closed lower on a quiet day, but still ended the year posting big gains.
Dow Jones shed 120 points to 10,428. The S&P 500 fell 22 to 2,269 while Nasdaq gave up 11 at 1,115.
The falls couldn't dent was has been an impressive really for US markets since the Spring. Over the year, the Dow is up 20.2%, the S&P 500 is up 24.7% and the Nasdaq is up 45.1%, but since the lows in March the Dow has gained 61% and the S&P 500 has gained 66%. Nasdaq is up over 80%.
The main economic news today was the weekly dole claimant figure with new claims for unemployment down to 432,000 last week, the lowest level since July 2008.
