A number of workers have been shot at an Amplats mine in South Africa, following a confrontation between rival unions and security guards, reports claim.

According to ENCA television, one worker was killed at the Siphumelele shaft, while another four have died in other parts of the mine.

A spokesman for the police reportedly said that he did not know how many have been injured or killed, but confirmed those involved are from the National Union of Mineworkers, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, as well as security guards at the mine.

Shares in Anglo American, which owns Amplats, had fallen 2.38% to 1,990.50p by 15:00 on Monday.

South African mines were also hit by strikes and violence last year, resulting in a negative impact on output and numerous deaths.
