US stocks are set to open moderately firmer, checking the slide seen in yesterday afternoon's session.

Spread betting quotes suggest the Dow Jones 30-share index will open up around 20 points higher while the broader-based S&P 500 is set to start a point to the good.

Banking giant JP Morgan has reported a 34% increase in third quarter earnings on the back of a 6.1% rise in revenue. The figures were ahead of expectations and bode well for the banking results season, which JP Morgan has kicked off.

Earnings per share were $1.40, versus $1.02 a share in the third quarter of last year.

Computer chip firm Advanced Micro Devices continues to struggle. After the bell last night it warned that third quarter revenue would be below expectations. The firm now expects third quarter revenues will be about a tenth lower than in the second quarter.
