Standard & Poor's (S&P) has affirmed Japan's long and short-term ratings at 'AA-' and 'A-1+', respectively, noting that the country's credit characteristics include one of the strongest external profiles and one of the weakest fiscal positions.

Nonetheless, the credit agency maintains a negative outlook on the country's ratings due to concerns that government policies could be ineffective in ending deflationary pressures or supporting growth.

In this context, these analysts currently calculate that there is "at least a one-third chance" that they might lower Japan's ratings in the coming fiscal year. However, they note that if government policies are successful, this could help the ratings stabilize this year at current levels.
