Spanish labour trade unions and other civil organisations under the "Social Summit" umbrella are mulling over the possibility of holding a general strike on November 14th in what would be Spain's seventh general strike since becoming a democracy.

Fernando Lezcano, communications secretary for Spanish trade union confederation CCOO, has said that November 14th was a likely date although it remains to be decided, Europa Press reports.

The main problem with the date is that it coincides with Catalonia's elections. Lezcano explained that strikes have always been avoided when there is an electoral campaign taking place.

November 14th is an important date because neighbouring country Portugal has already called a general strike for that day. As such, the Iberian peninsula may find itself subject to a wave of protests over the austerity measures that ailing countries have approved amidst the crisis.

If finally convoked, it would be the first time that Spain holds two general strikes in the same year, Europa Press points out.
