Five-a-side football pitch operator Goals Soccer Centres did not have the best of winters, thanks to poor weather, so it must have been revelling in the early arrival of summer in Britain.

Even before the good weather arrived, the group said back in April that it was trading in line with the board's expectations, "with a good trading performance from the core football product and continued improvement in corporate events and children's parties."

The company is embroiled in a disagreement with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs office over whether commercially operated sports leagues should be standard rated for VAT purposes, and may give an update on its challenge to the tax man's position when it gives a trading update on Friday.

Shareholders will also be keen to receive an update on the firm's plans to open new centres. The proposed centre in Hull should have opened in May, and three more are scheduled to kick off this year.
