Dollar momentum ran out of steam on Monday in the wake of positive US jobs figures and as focus turned to disappointing Chinese data.

US government figures out Friday showed unexpected strong job gains in February while the unemployment rate tumbled to a four-year low. The report increased speculation that the Federal Reserve could unwind its loose monetary policy sooner than previously thought.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six other currencies, declined to 82.601 from 82.900 on Friday.

Against the yen, the dollar traded at ¥96.34, up 0.3%. On Friday it traded at ¥96.54, almost a three year high.

Meanwhile the dollar fell against the euro as profit takers moved in after the US currency hit a three year high against the single currency on Friday.

The euro changed hands at $1.3034, up 0.3%. On Friday the euro was hit by Fitch's downgrade on Italy.
