The dollar rose on Thursday, boosted by better-than-expected jobs data, and gaining in particular against the Japanese yen, which suffered after a senior government official was reported as saying a decline to 100 yen a dollar would not be a problem.

Initial weekly US unemployment claims fell by 5,000 to the 330,000 mark (Consensus: 355,000).

The dollar traded hands with the Japanese yen at ¥89.89, compared to ¥88.61 the late the previous day.

The ICE dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six other major currencies, rose from 79.940 Wednesday evening to 79.961 last night.

The euro bought $1.3373, against $1.3318 the previous evening, having climbed to $1.3355 prior to the claims data.

Meanwhile, the pound dropped from $1.5845 to $1.5792 overnight.
