Randgold Resources was leading the FTSE 100 race Monday after the gold exploration and development company posted a 16 per cent rise in profits for the full year.
Production levels for the year also climbed 14% to 794,844 ounces of gold, while quarter-on-quarter profit was up 18% and production up 5%.
Following close by was pharmaceuticals giant Shire Plc which soared after Barclays moved the target price from 2,300p to 2,350p, retaining an 'overweight' rating.
In third place, Carnival jumped after the cruise company last week unveiled details of its stock repurchase programme. Carnival Corporation and its subsidiary Carnival Investment intend to sell up to 32m existing Carnival plc ordinary shares they hold in the UK market.
Heading the other way was Antofagasta which continued to fall following its warning last week that copper and gold output which drop this year amid an increase in production costs.
Johnson Matthey joined the bottom after Citi brokers cut the precious metals and chemicals group to 'neutral' from 'buy' with a lower target price of 2,450p, down 200p.
Banks were under the weather after UK Chancellor George Osborne warned lenders that the government could separate retail operations from riskier activities if they break the rules. RBS, Standard Chartered, HSBC, Lloyds and Barclays were all lower.
Barclays was also being weighed down after announcing that its long-running Finance Director, Chris Lucas, has stepped down ahead of the group's conclusion of its strategic review in the coming weeks
