Miners were performing well on Friday as continued growth in China's manufacturing lifted the demand outlook for commodities. Fresnillo and Vedanta Resources were among the best performers.
Telecoms giant BT was a high riser today after its third-quarter results, as cost control helped it to beat expectations on the bottom line. Pre-tax profit increased by 7.0% in the quarter to £675m, however, revenues fell 6.0% to £4.5bn.
Meanwhile, RBS was lower after a Sky News report alleged that the bank is examining proposals to claw back up to £100m from pay deals previously awarded to executives in its investment bank as it prepares to settle allegations that it played a role in the LIBOR rate-rigging conspiracy.
Sector peer Barclays was also heading south after its Chief Executive Officer, Antony Jenkins, announced he would waive his bonus for 2012 as the bank tries to mend its image following a series of scandals. Jenkins was appointed the new boss in August, following the departure of Bob Diamond, who stepped down amid the bank's alleged involvement in LIBOR rigging. Regulators in the US and UK fined the bank £290m.
Shell was suffering the effects of a downgrade by UBS.
Sweeteners and food products group Tate & Lyle after saying that third-quarter profits, while in line with expectations, were lower than they were last year. The company also warned about the elevated levels of volatile corn prices and the impact of the hot summer last year. "We read the Q3 as cautious in tone and a downgrading influence on numbers," said analyst Martin Deboo from Investec.
