Financial services firm Hargreaves Lansdown rose to the top of the FTSE 100 Tuesday - one day ahead of its interim results. Analysts at Barclays today raised their price target on the firm's shares to 820p from 800p.
Microprocessor IP licensing company ARM Holdings was also climbing the ladder after releasing better-than-expected fourth quarter and full-year results.
Surprisingly BG Group shares rose despite reporting a 29% fall in adjusted profits.
The biggest faller on the benchmark was Standard Life which was still reeling last week's news the insurance group cut bonuses on its unitised pension plans and life plans.
Medical company Smith & Nephew plunged as the company plans to let go of almost 100 workers at its plants in Tennessee and Massachusetts. Analysts at Panmure Gordon have downgraded their view on the shares to hold from buy.
Gas owner Centrica tumbled after a downgrade out of analysts at Bank of America Merill Lynch to underperform from neutral. These analysts wrote that "The focus now shifts to the strategy update on February 27th - against a backdrop of pedestrian organic earnings growth, we think it will be difficult to inspire investors to award further multiple expansion for a plan likely to be centred on acquisitions and with heightened reinvestment risk".
