Buyers have returned to the market in Europe, and with the exception of Germany, bulls are in the ascendancy, ahead of this week's meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke is due to speak on Friday, on the topic of "Near- and Long-Term Prospects for the US Economy". The bulls are hoping that Bernanke will announce new measures to calm global markets. Last year, Bernanke used his speech at last year's gathering to pave the way for "QEII", the Fed's second round of quantitative easing. However, having already recently announced a two-year interest rate freeze Bernanke may not have many more rabbits left to pull out of the hat.
The DAX in Frankfurt is off 5 points at 5,474 but in Paris the CAC is up 24 at 3,040 while in Milan the MIB races ahead to 14,956, up 354 points.
Italian energy firm Eni leads Milan's advance as the civil war in Libya looks like it could be entering its final phase. An end to hostilities would enable Eni to start shipping oil from the country in normal quantities. Eni's French peer, Total, is higher for similar reasons.
Danish lender Jyske Bank disappointed with its second-quarter earnings figures. Net income of DKr.88m was well below the DKr.260m the market had been expecting.
