Integrated energy company Centrica has responded to recent press speculation regarding the likely successor to Phil Bentley as head of British Gas.

The FTSE 100-listed energy retailer said: "It is expected that a proposal that Chris Weston will succeed Phil Bentley as the director responsible for British Gas as part of the succession planning and the strategic evolution of the company will be presented to the board of the company and, if approved, will be announced with the company's preliminary results on February 27th."

Bentley is stepping down as Managing Director following six years at the helm of the gas and electricity supplier. He joined Centrica as Group finance Director in 2000.

Centrica's share price was down 0.90% to 341.40p at 08:59 on Friday.
