British online fashion retailer Asos on Thursday posted a 41 per cent rise in sales over the Christmas period as reduced prices lured shoppers.

Asos, aimed at twenty-somethings, said global retail sales in December climbed to £78.1m year-on-year for the month ended December 31st.

Christmas sales were strongest in the group's overseas market with a 57% increase in the US and 42% elsewhere, while UK sales jumped 34%.

International sales represented 54% of the total in December which was a higher proportion than the 52% the previous year.

The company received two million orders from its customer base of over five million.

"I am pleased to report very strong trading during December with retail sales up 41% to £78m," Chief Executive Officer Nick Robertson said.

"We remain positive in our outlook for 2012/13 as we continue our journey to becoming the number one online fashion destination for twenty-somethings, globally."

Shares increased 0.34% to 2,663.00p at 10:40 Thursday.
