Taking their lead from a buoyant Wall Street, Asian markets ended the week with a flourish, with mineral companies and industrials leading the advance.

Consumer electronics titan Sony was wanted after maintaining its full-year profits guidance. Sector peer Sharp was off the pace, however, after it changed its full-year guidance to indicate an expected loss of 450bn yen, versus previous guidance of a loss of 250bn yen.

Camera maker Nikon was another company scaling back expectations, trimming its operating profit forecast by 15% to 72bn yen.

Better than expected half-year numbers lifted Sumitomo Heavy Industries, the maker of electric machinery.

Punters were also piling into Sands China, the casino operator, which enjoyed a boost from the opening of a new resort in Macau, often called the Las Vegas of the East, although arguably it is a bigger gambling centre than Las Vegas.
